The song was originally inspired by Cormac McCarthy's book The Road. The title of the song is a direct quote from the book. The lyrics of the song were, however, changed when Editors got the request to put it on the second Twilight soundtrack. To make it more fitting for the soundtrack words like 'son' were removed.
