Reynolds wrote “No Control” after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In a November 2018 interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he discussed the process: “I wrote the song maybe six or seven months ago when I was going through chemo … It was probably the fastest I’ve written a song. It happened probably within 30 minutes.” The song garnered attention in September 2018, when Reynolds' childhood friend, rapper Mac Miller, promoted the song on Twitter six days before his death.
