"Never Without You" was written by Ringo Starr in memory of his former bandmate and friend, George Harrison, who died in November 2001. The song references Harrison's music in both musical and lyrical form: for example, the chorus makes references to the songs "Within You Without You" and "Here Comes the Sun". Additionally, the opening guitar riff to "What Is Life" is heard just before Starr sings a line that makes a reference to "All Things Must Pass".
