"Material Girl" is a commentary on the extravagances of the rich and famous, while also expressing an aspirational desire to be accepted and admired by them. In the chorus, Madonna sings: "We are living in a material world and I am a material girl", suggesting that material wealth and status is of great importance, even though she has yet to realise it. The verses speak of her encounters with different boys who are trying to impress her, but if they don't have the money to do so, Madonna simply walks away.
