On “Marching Bands of Manhattan”, Gibbard uses geographical imagery of the Isle of Manhattan, comparing the love he professes from his mouth to the sound of a marching band echoing throughout the city. He compares the other person’s love to a fluid that will ultimately drown. The beautiful opening track for the album features the band’s signature sound, beginning with minimal instrumentation around Gibbard’s vocals, building into a mid-tempo anthemic that sounds fitting for a marching band.
