Matthew Shepard was a homosexual university student in Wyoming, USA who was beaten and left to die in what was ruled as a hate crime, leading to new legislation and efforts to stop future hate crimes against the LGBT community. Geoff spoke on this song in a VH1 interview: The last verse has a quote from his father from his murderers' trial, where he said, “That voice is silent now. The boat has sunk.” He’s talking about all these songs that Matthew used to sing and stories that he used to read.
