“Lies” is the first song that CHVRCHES released, initially under the name CHURCHES. An early version of the song was first posted exclusively to the Neon Gold Records blog in May 2012, where it was described as a “godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy”. The band’s identity was anonymous upon its first release, and the song was only accompanied by a picture of nuns in masks. A re-recorded version would later appear on their 2013 debut album The Bones of What You Believe
