The opening track of Depression Cherry can be seen as a bridge from the preceding album Bloom to a new era for the duo. “Levitation” uses motives from Bloom’s closing track, “Irene.” The bass line and the piano pattern of “Irene” appear reversed during the last third of “Levitation.” The lyrics could further hint at “Irene.” “There’s a place I want to take you” might allude to the “strange paradise” mentioned in the chorus of “Irene.”
