The lead track on the Let's Dance album, released as a single in March 1983, marked a significant change in direction for Bowie. Moving away from the Berlin-period albums and Scary Monsters, the new album was produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic and introduced a hard-edged funk style. The memorable video, with its images of Australia seen through the eyes of marginalized Aborigines, contributed to the single's massive success, and it made number one in the UK and the USA.
