"Le Freak" is a 1978 hit funk-disco song by disco band Chic. It released on September 21, 1978 as the lead single from their second album, C'est Chic (1978). It was the band's third single and first Billboard Hot 100 #1 song. According to the Le Freak Songfacts, Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers wrote this after they were not allowed to enter New York City's Studio 54 nightclub on New Year's Eve 1977. A New York Times critic describes the song as a "haunting, minimalist pop-funk built around the guitar and bass".
