This song was in large part inspired by the prospect of the closing of the last General Store, which doubled as the town Post Office, in Bynum, NC. (At one point in its history, Bynum had boasted as many as five General Stores.) Tift Merritt once gave a concert in front of that store, which later closed in 2006. Since then, it has been reopened and kept vibrant as a community center, stage for musical performances, and gathering place. As David Hart of the Chapel Hill News described it
