Kol Nidre(i) is a declaration recited in the synagogue before the evening service on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Written in Aramaic, not Hebrew, it takes its name from the two opening words meaning “all vows”. As Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year for religious Jews, and is the most observed holiday also by many secular Jews, who attend synagogue at least on this one occasion in a year, it is no wonder that the words Kol Nidre are so well known world-wide.
