So “writing the letter” is saying we can’t speak in close so we have to talk using long-distance communication. It seems bittersweet like they both wanted to stay romantically interested, but ended up separating for whatever reason. Contrary to popular belief, Rob has recently said that the album is not about robots at all, and stated that International is a “break up song”.
