“Heaven Beside You” was written primarily by guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who serves as lead vocalist, with Layne Staley providing backing vocals. It blends the best of the band’s acoustic and metal sides into an aggressively sorrowful contemplation of lost love, as the track is acknowledged by Cantrell to be about a romantic relationship severed by his own infidelity.
