"Heathens" was released on December 3, 2021 as the first promotional single from AURORA's third studio album The Gods We Can Touch. It is the seventh track on the album. Its release was unexpectedly announced on December 2, 2021. According to AURORA's official store, the entity of this song is Perséfone, queen of the damned. AURORA explained to Australian radio station Triple J that the track is inspired by the classic tale from the Book of Genesis
