Happy Instead starts off with Bryan reflecting on a past relationship, trying not to reach out while reminiscing on the good times they used to have. He ultimately wishes for happiness, however he has to deal with the reality that she is happy without him. As the song progresses and "years" pass, Bryan has forgotten about this past relationship, becoming happy himself. The past lover eventually reaches out, only to find out Bryan is now happy without her.
