Hand of Glory was written by Jimmy Silva, a friend of the band. Who recorded his own version of the song on his album Remnants of the Empty Set in 1986 featuring Dennis Diken on drums. DiNizio explained that it was "the type of song that had a lot of energy live and it always went over great, and we thought we'd give it a shot in the studio, and it wound up on the album."
This album merits attention for its thoughtful approach to songwriting collaboration and live energy translation. By embracing material from outside composer Jimmy Silva, The Smithereens demonstrate artistic generosity and confidence in their interpretive abilities. The presence of drummer Dennis Diken on Silva's original recording creates an intriguing lineage, suggesting creative exchange within their musical community. Their decision to capture songs' live vitality in studio settings reveals an understanding that recorded music need not abandon spontaneity. The project ultimately illustrates how bands can maintain distinctive identity while remaining open to external voices, offering insight into the creative processes that shaped 1980s alternative rock.
