This is one of 3 songs originating from the “Basement Sessions” recordings in 1993 which were used as a basis for later Slipknot songs. Originally written by Shawn Crahan in high school, “Gently” appeared as the second track on Slipknot’s official first self-distributed album, which they released on October 31, 1996. When Corey Taylor joined the band, the intro was cut, and small changes were made to the lyrics. It was then rerecorded and included on Iowa.
