Nelson wrote this in 1961 for Patsy Cline, one of only a few big names in Nashville at the time who understood him. Nelson was eventually rejected by the Nashville labels as too offbeat, too artsy-fartsy for mainstream country music. Nelson said of his early experience in Nashville: “I enjoyed fooling around with phrasing, but it made my sound noncommercial for all those Nashville ears who were listening for the same old stuff and misunderstood anything original.”
