This song was written for Eddy Balchowski, a concert pianist who was a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, a group of American and Canadian volunteers who went to Spain to join the fight against Franco and the Spanish fascists. Eddy lost one hand in the final retreat across the Ebro River. Eddy Balchowski returned to the States with a morphine addiction and ended up on the streets of Chicago. Later, he worked at the Quiet Knight in Old Town, and became friends with many of the performers that passed through.
