"Erotica" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna for her fifth studio album, Erotica. It was written by Madona, Shep Pettibone and Tony Shimkin, and produced by the former two. It was released as the record's lead single in October 1992 by Maverick Records. Released amidst a blaze of criticism against the singer, "Erotica" became her first lead single from an album not to hit number one in the U.S. since her debut album in 1983. The track was highly controversial when it was released due to its sexual theme and suggestive lyrics.
