“Ego“ is second song on Halsey's fifth studio album, The Great Impersonator. Categorized as a '90s' song, the single goes over the themes of insecurity and emotional wounds. The track also goes over being a misunderstood and lonely people pleaser in the past and having to mask everything in order to appeal to others. The track was revealed to be inspired by Dolores Mary Eileen O'Riordan, the lead vocalist of the rock band The Cranberries on October 13th.
