Eben Sterling met Bradley Nowell in January of 1988 as students at University of California, Santa Cruz: the two bonded over a shared appreciation of Jamaican music. Using Brad's 4-track recorder, the pair recorded a song called "Celebration". Eben had written the lyrics and "catchy turnaround" while Bradley wrote the chord progression. The next day, Bradley called Eben to say the song had been re-recorded with new lyrics and a title based on him (misspelling the name to "Ebin" to provide some anonymity).
