Mitchell flashes back to her childhood in Saskatoon for "Cherokee Louise", about a sexually abused friend hiding under the city's Broadway Bridge, comforting herself by leafing through the pages of a comic book and a movie magazine. When introducing the song in live performance, Mitchell noted that it was based on a childhood friend named Mary who was a Cree - but "Cree Mary" clearly doesn't roll of the tongue as musically as does Mitchell's renaming of the song's subject.
