Butterflies are often used as a symbol of beauty in the world, or, in Ashcroft’s case: using the butterfly as a symbol of achieving his life dream. Lucid dreams are dreams where the person having those dreams is aware that he’s asleep. This could have two meanings. Either Ashcroft is using the term to say that his life seems like one long dream that he’s never fully able to awake from, or that he’s aware that the butterfly isn’t real and is trying to chase something that he’ll never really catch.
