Inspired by Joni Mitchell's time with a cave-dwelling hippie community in the village of Matala, on the Greek island of Crete. According to the Carey Songfacts, Carey was an "unforgettable character" whom Joni met in Matala. He had flaming red hair and often wore a turban.
