“BUTTERFLY” is a psychedelic pop anthem about rebirth and new beginnings. It contributes the first part of the story from MARINA’s sixth album, as she stated on TikTok. It marks her first single since the deluxe edition of her previous record, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land. It is also MARINA’s first release as an independent artist under her own label Queenie Records. The song describes the poetic metamorphosis of the protagonist, becoming a butterfly after the cocoon.
