'Brilliant Corners' exemplifies Monk's genius both as a band leader and composer. According to Robin Kelley's library of congress essay on the album - Monk did not share the music for the title track, preferring musicians to learn by ear. He also neglected to tell the rest of the band that the tune had a 22 bar, rather than traditional 32 bar structure. Only Sonny Rollins could get his head around it by the time of the recording - and bassist Oscar
