The first time you hear Anne Briggs sing Blackwaterside you fall in love a little. Like the other songs chosen, it has that strange ability to transport you to another time and place, somewhere in the past but you’re not quite sure when and where. Another traditional tune, it would later be adapted by her partner Bert Jansch whose own arrangement was copied by Jimmy Page for Led Zeppelin’s tabla driven Black Mountain Side. It’s a difficult starting point when a song so sparse already works so well.
