This song was written about the race riots in Detroit, Michigan over the period July 23-29, 1967. The governor mentioned was George W. Romney, who ordered in the Michigan National Guard to control the riot; the president, Lyndon B Johnson, who ordered in the Army. "Black Day in July" was banned by a number of stations in the US when it was released in 1968.
