BFO: a beat frequency oscillator in the receiver provides the second heterodyning frequency, which is added ('tuned') until the signal becomes clear. When tuned to a pure carrier, containing no data, this beat-frequency produces a sine-tone that can be twiddled and 'played' like a musical instrument.
