Originally, 'better off' wasn’t intended to be on Ariana's fourth studio album 'Sweetener', however, she changed her mind and decided to add more songs to the album. Ariana revealed on Twitter that 'better off' was the first song she added back to the album tracklist. She further reiterated this on an interview with Zach Sang on the Zach Sang Show that she wasn’t going to put it on the album in fear of its honesty of her relationship at the time and its potential to go south.
