As the opener of instrumental avant-garde post-rock band Cougar's 2006 début album Law, "Atlatl" provides an apt exemplar of what the band describe as "emergency rock". Complimentary guitar chimes layer over a seemingly discordant bassline, framed by vaguely perceptible ambient vocals as the drums provide structure. The track is gradually layered, building towards a cacophonous climax of duelling guitars, met at the breakdown's denouement by solitary, off-beat bass hits and multiple layers of percussion and drumming.
