Apistat Commander, the second track off Xiu Xiu’s 2003 album A Promise, was written about suicide, and coping with suicidal thoughts. Jamie mentions former band member Yvonne Chen’s name in this track, as well as her siblings Wei and Huai. Jamie stated in an interview that “ The names are more there to illustrate what there is to lose from suicide.” Jamie goes on to say that the track is not pro-suicide: “It’s more just dealing with it as a way of life.
