Lana Del Rey is an American. She was born in New York City, and grew up on Lake Placid, New York. "American" is a celebration of the American Dream. The lyrics depict two lovers driving around a city exploring and embracing the freedom of being young and in love. The upbeat chorus calls for the listener to be "dope, be proud, like an American" which conveys the sentiment of the unbridled joy, joyfulness, and pride of American culture and the American Dream.
