Song
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (1917-1993), the pioneering jazz trumpeter known for his bent horn and puffed cheeks, brought revolutionary interpretations to the jazz standard All the Things You Are. This sophisticated composition, written in 1939 by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, originally appeared in the musical "Very Warm for May" before becoming a cornerstone of the jazz repertoire. What made Gillespie's approach unique was his bebop-influenced reharmonization of the tune.
