“A Place for My Head” originally rooted in their earliest creative explorations as the band Xero. The ninth track on their debut album Hybrid Theory, the song evolved from a demo titled “Esaul,” named after a friend of the band. Early iterations featured lyrical contributions from original vocalist Mark Wakefield, with Mike Shinoda noting the track’s rhythmic bounce drew inspiration from Deftones' fusion of heavy guitars and hip-hop grooves.
