"When you get a group of musicians together, all they want to do is jam. And that's so boring!" -Brian Eno (paraphrased) The year was 1994 and the beginnings of Zurround started the way many groups do- musicians getting together to jam, playing the occasional party. The first real presence was in 1995 in the form of Surround, an improvisational and eclectic mix of acoustic percussion, various electronic instruments and strange devices, performing during the Easter holiday debauchery known as the annual Minicon (the 30th) science fiction convention. It was held at what was then known as the Radisson South hotel in Bloomington MN. The group had floating members but always included the nexus of Jj Kidder and Scott Keever. Easter of 1997, Minicon #32, saw the nexus that was Surround swell and morph into Zurround. Dr. Nick was a regular by that time and with the addition of Zharachne as vocalist the band performed at both Minicon and the Soap Factory's annual “Art-a-Whirl” party to much acclaim and positive feedback. They played a few smaller gigs and parties and then in July of that year riding on a wave of success a wild idea was hatched. Zurround and friends decided to descend upon the Church of the Subgenius in New York state for their annual party, the X-day drill. Arriving completely unannounced with all their gear they arrived as a godsend. It turned out the two bands scheduled to play both had to cancel at the last minute.
