EXO (Korean: 엑소) is a twelve-member South Korean-Chinese boy group under SM Entertainment, formed in 2012. EXO is divided into two subgroups, EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO is divided into two subgroups, EXO-K and EXO-M, promoting in South Korea and China separately. There is still debate over the number of members in each subgroup: theories differ between having 6 members in each, or EXO-K having 7 members and EXO-M having 5 members. "The two new rookie groups that will be released by SM will debut at the same day, same time, and same song in both Korea and China respectively". History Pre-Debut SM Entertainment initially announced on January 27th, 2011 that they would debut a new male group in March or April of that year. They were known under the codename “M1”, netizens at the time referred to them as ‘소년천지‘ (literally “Boy’s Heaven” or “Land of Boys”). SM also revealed plans to incorporate the new group into the OST of "Paradise Ranch," which never came into fruition. On March 22, a picture of "M1" practicing in the SM practice room with seven members leaked. At this time it was rumored that Jino of SM The Ballad would be part of "M1".
