The Children of Power were: Darren (Daz) Smith from Swindon, Danny from Cornwall, and Matthew James from Aldershot, Hampshire. Danny and Matthew met at a mutual friend's engagement party in July 1990, and Danny likely met Daz at the Greenbelt Christian festival the next month. They first played together in September of 1990, recording a 4-track demo of Angel and Ashes in November of that year. The album, Innocence, was recorded over four days in April 1991 at Soundtree studio in Bolton. Varied influences included: The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission, The Smiths, The Cure, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band never played live due to missing out on a record deal, and only 200 cassette copies were originally released until a digital re-release by Key Records in 2011.
