Artist
Takaotubo is a music project started by Jakarta-based artist Adolf Bernardinus in 2017 Capturing the inner human struggle to break free from the mundane burden of existence, this one-man project does so by creating spacious atmospheres of melancholia and pensive meditations through striding the line between poetic heart-on-sleeve folk pop and ambient chillhop-adjacent electronic infused with free-jazz tendencies. Not one for missing out on musical and emotional versatility, Bernardinus meticulously crafts songs that draw from personal events and the feelings that arise from having them imprinted in his mind, conjuring moods and soundscapes that reflect those feelings, like the subtly sample-ladened Sleep that evokes thoughtful pondering unjustified by mere words and lyrics, and the reserved yet ever so danceable New Year Song that projects so many sonic and emotive interpretations that there are (as of this writing) six different versions of the song compiled into an EP each with their own quirks and differences. Whether exposing the uncomfortability of the human condition or flipping playfully flipping genres on its head, Takaotubo embodies the essence of what it means to exist. Not as a prophet. Not as a prominent historical figure. Not as a philosopher. But a friend.
