swanskin is made up of Cleo McKenzie, the optimistic deep South transplant, and Juno Raphael, the jaded California suburbanite. Despite the vast difference in their origins, the two find common ground via a universal trans experience: hating where you’re from. Pulling from their mismatched personal histories, Raphael and McKenzie craft a vivid and emotional story of queer love and trans sisterhood, as well as the jealousy and self-doubt that can get in the way. Sonically the album provides an equally dynamic sound palette, bringing together a myriad of influences ranging from Judee Sill to Fleshwater. The dreamy impressionistic sounds of shoegaze are cut with the explosive edge of 5th-wave emo and the shimmering effervescence of hyperpop resulting in a strikingly original style.
