Jason(Shame the Poet) Reyes Bio Before an artist, a poet, or an emcee, Jason Reyes is, first and foremost, a fan of hip hop. Jason, who is multi-cultural but identifies as Chicano, is a native of the Yakima Valley in Washington State. He began rhyming because of a simple class assignment. “In the fifth grade, I became fascinated with rhyming words after we had to memorize poems as a part of a class assignment, and I started writing poems of my own,” Jason said. He went on to develop raps from his poems because it was more accepted and could easily be passed off as a joke. Due to his introverted nature, Jason never joined any of the hip hop crews that were developing at his high school. Upon graduating, Jason eventually hooked up with some older kids from school, creating hardcore hip hop. “It built my confidence and even arrogance,” he says, smiling. Eventually the crews dissipated but Jason kept writing. Staying true to his poetic form, Jason kept writing verses but only occasionally wrote songs. His nephew, (Joey Beatz), was quietly making beats and inspired Jason to finish an album that he only treated as a far off dream. His nephew has now handled 90 percent of the production of Jason’s debut album It’s About Time, the title being a running joke among friends who have been waiting for Jason to drop his long-awaited album. Jason’s biggest hip hop influences are classic native tongues and rhyme syndicate crews, as well as Boogie Down Productions,
