Nel Gatlin is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Elberta, AL. First releasing music in 2008 under the name Color Earth, Nel explored experimental sounds blending acoustic pop and post-rock. In subsequent years, they contributed talents to various projects, including fronting the rock band Helen Keller in 2012 and playing drums for The Ids alongside bandmates Andrew Hynes and Jonni Maria. Nel would go on to play drums for Pensacola, FL bands such as Atlantis Morissette in 2014 and the math-rock group if/then from 2017 to 2018. In 2019, Nel co-founded the post-hardcore/emo band Happymask with drummer Ty, guitarist of Surrounder, and bassist Andrew Hynes, former frontperson of Youth Creatures and Nel's longtime friend and musical collaborator. The band gained some prominence in the Pensacola music scene before going on permanent hiatus in 2020, only to play once more in 2022 before ultimately disbanding.
