The Lonesome D String Band is basement folkie Dan Greenwood, of suburban Philadelphia. Folk music's in his genes, to an extent - his parents' first date was a Simon & Garfunkel concert (January 1967), and early on they compared Weavers records. An interest in roots music was therefore fostered early, and while he played trumpet in jazz, marching and concert bands in school, at home a steady diet of acoustic & classic rock led to explorations of his parents' records and Sunday nights listening to the Gene Shay show. Like any budding folk fan, he took up guitar and harmonica, and by the end of high school had a banjo as well. After the first of many trips to the Philadelphia Folk Festival, he made his first washtub bass; college in rural Vermont followed by a few years teaching in rural Japan made an impact as well. By the time he got a 4-track in late 2005, he'd acquired a slew of noisemaking toys and begun to develop an eclectic sound rooted in an old-timey repertoire, with arrangements frequently drawing on international styles and unusual instrumentation. Dan returned to the Philadelphia area around 2000 and still lives there with his wife and kids. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
