Artist
heli müra vaikus* is an experimental project that explores the interaction of sound, noise and silence in electronic music production. Its first album, Inelegant Sophistication, is organized in relatively short tracks where random noises and melodies are assembled into repetitive structures, thus creating an hypnotic effect that requires the listener to re-examine its attitude towards music consumption. Inelegant Sophistication is also a reflection on how meaning is the byproduct of previously agreed structures. When electronic music pushes beyond those boundaries, the listener perceives unstructured content that may be described as noise. Hence the album's subtitle, "müra informatsiooniteoorias", Estonian for "noise in information theory". The album's tracks are randomly named in different languages. The project's name is in Estonian. This points to the fact that languages, as art styles, are nothing but social conventions. One of music's many functions is to review those conventions, creating new systems of signs that are capable of expressing radically new concepts. This project uses only open-source software. The output is also released as open source and can be used in any way. However, a reference to the artists would be appreciated. *heli müra vaikus is Estonian for "sound, noise and silence".
