cinema staff is a Japanese four-piece alternative rockband formed in Gifu in 2006. They high school classmates Tsuji, Iida, and Mishima already formed a band in 2003 which was called "REAL". In 2006, with the members entering university, a new drummer joined, and the band changed its name to cinema staff. Around the same time, Mishima became a member of the American Folk Music Research Society at Nanzan University, where he met drummer Kuno, who would complete the band’s current lineup. Based in Nagoya, they began performing actively in the local scene. In September 2006, cinema staff won the grand prize at the COLLEGE ROCK FESTIVAL 2006 national competition, followed by an appearance at the TEENS' MUSIC FESTIVAL 2006 later that year. In November 2008, the band made its indie debut on Zankyo Record. By 2010, cinema staff had grown a dedicated following, selling out their first one-man shows at Shibuya O-nest and CLUB ROCK’N’ROLL. In 2011, they were selected for iTunes Store’s “Japan Sound of 2011” as one of the ten most promising new artists. The following year, their self-titled album won the Tokai Block Prize at the CD Shop Awards 2012, and they made their major debut on Pony Canyon with their EP "into the green".
