“Andrew Meza has set the international standard...The undisputed champion of the beats.” - Shook Magazine “BTS Radio is awesome...Andrew Meza is destroying the game right now, he’s got people around the world biting his show.” - Flying Lotus (Warp/Brainfeeder) Growing up in Whittier, CA, just outside of LA, Andrew Meza was shaped musically by his parents and older siblings, who varied in tastes ranging from showtunes to punk. His interest in DJing and radio was sparked early on by radio shows like Los Angeles' Friday Night Flavas on Power 106, the early releases of seminal independent labels Stones Throw and Rawkus Records and the mobile DJ/backyard party culture in greater Los Angeles. Upon entering Cal State Fullerton, Andrew joined the team at the campus' newly-founded Titan Radio and began his solo run program, Beneath the Surface, or BTS. The show premiered on October 7, 2003, the same day Jaylib's "Champion Sound" LP was released by Stones Throw. In tribute, Meza played a two-hour set of only Madlib and J Dilla and set the stage for the next four years of groundbreaking, weekly free-form programming. Meza’s unique format incorporated local LA producers/mcs with more far-reaching underground sounds from around the globe, with guest appearances and mixes from the likes of Peanut Butter Wolf and J*Davey to Four Tet, members of The Avalanches, Cinematic Orchestra and 4Hero, and showcasing artists like Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Blu and Georgia Anne Muldrow.
