There are at least seven bands/acts called Zen. 1. Zen was a Dutch pop/rock band of the late 1960s, established in 1965 by by Siegfried 'Siebe' de Jong (vocals, saxophone) and Dirk van der Ploeg (guitar, vocals). They are almost exclusively known for their version of the theme song from the musical 'Hair', which made them the perfect 'one hit wonder' in early 1969. Recorded in late 1968, 'Hair' rocketed straight to #1 in the Dutch Top 40 in January 1969. The début LP Hair (1969) was an integral cover version of the musical's soundtrack. That year the band was joined by Harry Rijnbergen and Bennie Groen of the recently dissolved RO-D-YS. Rijnbergen penned Zen's second and last hit single, 'Get Me Down', peaking at #26 in The Dutch charts. The band more or less split up in 1970, but resurfaced a number of times throughout the 1970s, in various line-ups, one of which released a second studio LP (Zen Again, 1973). 2. Zen is an alternative rock band formed in Peru in 2002.
