Zack Kouns is from Ironton, Ohio, United States, in a remote part of Appalachia. "Crab Nebula," is where he will tell you. A distant relative of Sun Ra? Quite parallel to his music in a way: you never really know where he's coming from or where he's going, but somehow it works. Through an undocumented amount of releases on boutique labels including Chocolate Monk, Bumtapes, Isle of Man, Teenage Whore Tapes, Clinical Archives, Ownness, Wintage Records & Tapes and Tired Trails Collective, Zack Kouns has found his way into the hearts of the international experimental music, outsider folk and lo-fi pop movements. But these records aren't thrown together, nor are they throwaways, in any sense. Each composition is carefully constructed around a certain theme - Zack Kouns draws heavily from religion, mythology, ancient history, and romantic philosophy - and follows through musical progressions, jumping song to song from free folk to Nick Cavesque ballads to ambient electronics to free jazz, but with subtlety and thoughtfulness.
